How To Track like the Top 10% Affiliates [Part 1]

track to win

Facts:

  • 80% of our users launch their first campaigns within 7 minutes.
  • Only 10% of all of our users apply advanced settings in their campaigns.
  • Of that 10% almost all of them say they have more control over their traffic and are able to optimize campaigns faster.

When you decided that TrackingDesk would be your ultimate tracking solution, it was probably easy to see that it launching a campaign can be done in minutes.

The feeling of knowing that you don’t have to update tokens is an easiness that you probably never experienced before.

As you began to see more and more conversions on the analytics and duplicating successful campaigns some questions popped in your head:

“How can I scale up 2x more than I have before?”

“How do the pro affiliates like Charles NGO or Jon Chow do it?”

Regardless what these top affiliates are doing, there’s always one thing they have in common- being resourceful with what they have.

Tony Robbins quote

After speaking with thousands of users, it was easy to see that the top 10% always use almost everything the platform has to offer.

Don’t get me wrong, simply launching campaigns and checking your analytics dashboard for costs vs. revenue can powerfully save you time and money.

I sat down with our top 10% affiliates to get the scoop on what are the most useful settings in the platform to exponentially grow their campaigns.

In this 4 part post series, I’ll tell you about what they’re using and how to exploit TrackingDesk’ settings to it’s maximum potential so you can get the same results.

Even if you’re just starting out in the affiliate game, it doesn’t take an expert to learn and master the tools available to you on the platform. To start off, fallbacking is one of the most underused and easiest settings that our top users take advantage of.

Fallback: An Easy Way To Save Yourself From Losing Traffic

Fallbacking means this: Redirecting traffic to an offer suitable for a specific segment of traffic that was not initially targeted.

I’ve mentioned fallbacking time and time again in some of my previous posts, but to get straight to it- if you’re not doing it, you’re going to lose traffic at some point or another. And when you’re losing traffic you lose conversion opportunities.

For example, If you unintentionally send mobile US traffic to an offer that accepts only web UK traffic, fallbacking will automatically redirect this traffic to a similar offer that accepts mobile US traffic.

Why would it be useful you say?

If you’re running a campaign, especially in the gambling industry, it’s not uncommon to unintentionally send traffic to an offer that doesn’t accept people from their country.

When they arrive to the page they might end up seeing a page that looks something like this:

error page

Ouch… The good news is that it doesn’t take a tracking guru to setup fallbacking on a campaign. All it takes is a single click and the platform works its magic.

While I’ve heard many affiliates over the course of my career say that it’s only a “marginal loss” if you don’t fallback, that pretty much translated to that it was too difficult to set it up.

However, when users discover the fallbacking option they unanimously say that it’s easy to set up and saves them from lost traffic.

How To Do It

Click on the “Campaigns” tab in TrackingDesk after setting up your traffic sources, affiliate networks, and assets.

1. When making a new campaign  you’ll see a field called “Campaign Fallback” where you can choose three of the following options:

  •  Disabled – This option means TrackingDesk will keep sending fallback traffic to the assets that are defined in your campaign settings.
    fallback disabled

  • Custom URL – You can redirect traffic to the URL of your choice.
    fallback custom url

  • Global– Traffic will be sent to an asset matching the category and geo target that you’ve set in your TrackingDesk. This is highly recommended .
    fallback global campaign

2. Thats all! Complete the rest of the fields and launch your campaign.

It doesn’t take much to turn on the fallbacking setting so you’ll never have a user arrive to an irrelevant offer. All it takes is a click when setting up a campaign and you’re all set.

It doesn’t mean that you’ll be a tracking master all of a sudden, but you’ll be one step closer to optimizing your campaigns like an all star. Next post, I’m going to show you why your visitors might be landing on a blank page and how to solve it by setting up an organic/SEO campaign.
